Abstract As countries become more industrialized, they find no direct correlation between financial prowess and emotional well‐being. While the modern world prioritized economic‐led growth, the postmodern society will place more value on environmental protection and cultural identity.
Only a handful of the world's nation‐states can be categorized as failed or collapsed. Several dozen more, however, are serious candidates. What does it take to drive a failing state into collapse? Here is what to watch to determine who is in danger of failing next.
Because Washington and Beijing are both hedging their security bets about the other at precisely the time that the East Asian regional order is being redefined, reciprocal hedging today could precipitate a shift toward rivalry and regional instability unless it is carefully managed.
Although norms protecting the sovereignty of states still trump norms protecting the rights of individuals, the balance is shifting. Democracy promotion has become increasingly acceptable as a foreign policy goal throughout most of the international community.
