Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Nine Medicinal Plants from Zaire

Dave N Muanza, B. W. Kim, K. L. Euler et al. · 1 Jan 1994

Zairean medicinal plants were extracted and screened for in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities. Of nine plants investigated, extracts of six plants (Alchornea cordifolia, Bridelia ferruginea, Eucalyptus citriodora, Hymenocardia acida, Maprounea africana and Sida rhombifolia) demonstrated a marked antibacterial activity against the microorganisms Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans; and extracts of four plants…

An organic extract of Annatto (Bixa orellana) leaves obtained in 95% ethanol was examined for in vitro antifungal and antibacterial activity using the agar diffusion and tube dilution methods. The extract (5 mg/ml) produced antimicrobial action in agar diffusion assays against standard strains of Gram-positive bacteria including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus faecalis while…

Antiprotease and Membrane Stabilizing Activities of Extracts of Fagara Zanthoxyloides, Olax Subscorpioides and Tetrapleura Tetraptera

O. O. Oyedapo, Akindele J. Famurewa · 1 Jan 1995

The saline and alkaline extracts of Fagara zanthoxyloides, Olax subscorpioides and Tetrapleura tetraptera were investigated for antiprotease and membrane stabilizing activities by spectroscopic procedures. Saline extracts of these plants stabilized human red blood cell membrane subjected to hypotonic- and heat-induced lyses. The results revealed that the degree of membrane stabilization was 84% for F. zanthoxyloides…

The in vitro antioxidant potential of Triphala and its constituents was tested with the following systems: radical scavenging activity measured by DPPH reduction, and superoxide radical and peroxy radical scavenging properties measured by riboflavin/light/NBT reduction and linoleic acid peroxidation, respectively. Alcohol extracts of Triphala and its constituents were studied comparatively and found to be strong…
