Finite-Time Stability of Continuous Autonomous Systems

Sanjay P. Bhat, Dennis S. Bernstein · 1 Jan 2000

Abstract. Finite-time stability is dened for equilibria of continuous but non-Lipschitzian autonomous systems. Continuity, Lipschitz continuity, and Hölder continuity of the settling-time function are studied and illustrated with several examples. Lyapunov and converse Lyapunov re-sults involving scalar dierential inequalities are given for nite-time stability. It is shown that the regularity properties of the Lyapunov function…

Monotone Operators and the Proximal Point Algorithm

R. T. Rockafellar · 1 Aug 1976

For the problem of minimizing a lower semicontinuous proper convex function f on a Hilbert space, the proximal point algorithm in exact form generates a sequence $\{ z^k \} $ by taking $z^{k + 1} $ to be the minimizes of $f(z) + ({1 / {2c_k }})\| {z - z^k } \|^2 $, where $c_k…

Supervisory Control of a Class of Discrete Event Processes

Peter J. Ramadge, W.M. Wonham · 1 Jan 1987

The paper studies the control of a class of discrete event processes, i.e., processes that are discrete, asynchronous and possibly nondeterministic. The controlled process is described as the generator of a formal language, while the controller, or supervisor, is constructed from a recognizer for a specified target language that incorporates the desired closed-loop system behavior.…

Acceleration of Stochastic Approximation by Averaging

B. T. Polyak, Anatoli Juditsky · 1 Jul 1992

A new recursive algorithm of stochastic approximation type with the averaging of trajectories is investigated. Convergence with probability one is proved for a variety of classical optimization and identification problems. It is also demonstrated for these problems that the proposed algorithm achieves the highest possible rate of convergence.

Sharp Sufficient Conditions for the Observation, Control, and Stabilization of Waves from the Boundary

Claude Bardos, Gilles Lebeau, Jeffrey Rauch · 1 Sep 1992

For the observation or control of solutions of second-order hyperbolic equation in $\mathbb{R}_t \times \Omega $, Ralston’s construction of localized states [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 22 (1969), pp. 807–823] showed that it is necessary that the region of control meet every ray of geometric optics that has, at worst, transverse reflection at the boundary. For…
