The advantages of fiber waveguides over bulk nonlinear media are demonstrated. A review is given of the main nonlinear effects which occur during propagation of laser radiation in fiber waveguides. The most interesting applications of nonlinear fiber optics are discussed.

A theoretical analysis is made of the spontaneous emission from an excited atom or a molecule in a one-dimensional periodic structure formed by a screened two-conductor line filled with periodically distributed dielectric disks. It is shown that when the transition frequency lies within or close to the forbidden band of the periodic structure, the decay…
Single crystals of gadolinium vanadate doped with neodymium ions have been grown by the Czochralski method. The absorption and luminescence spectra of the neodymium have been measured. The absorption near 0.8 μm is higher than 70 cm −1 . The lifetime of the neodymium ions is 90 μs. Laser action has been achieved on the…
A description is given of a method for calibrating photodetectors based on some characteristics of the statistics of the field of spontaneous parametric light scattering. A phenomenological theory of parametric scattering is used to demonstrate that photons are only emitted in pairs. It is shown that, in principle, a priori information on the two-photon character…
The results are given of an investigation of the luminescence and stimulated emission spectra of powder phosphors of the Na5La1-x Ndx(MoO4)4 composition prepared by the method of solidstate synthesis. Stimulated emission of neodymium was observed under the influence of strong pumping with laser pulses of 30-nsec duration. Such emission was indicated by monochromatization of the…
