Abstract A new, simple procedure is described for the production of 5 nm colloidal gold/secondary antibody reagents. Utilizing them with antitubulin shows 1) that they can be used for high resolution ultrastructural localization studies and 2) that this can be done with retention of satisfactory preservation of cell structure. The same, simple procedure can be…

Since the original observation that a high rate of aerobic glycolysis is a hallmark of malignant cells (Warburg, 1926), considerable effort has been devoted to elucidation of the role of glycolysis in normal and transformed cell proliferation. Many explanations have been put forward to explain the high flux of glucose to lactate in proliferating normal…
It seems that superoxide dismutase plays the key role in protecting aerobes against O2 toxicity, but there is a whole range of ancillary mechanisms: enzymes to remove H2O2 (catalase, peroxidases) and hence to control formation of .OH from O2, which requires H2O2; antioxidants (ascorbate, GSH, alpha-tocopherol, carotenoids), which also react with singlet oxygen and/or .OH…
Abstract We have developed experimental conditions allowing the isolation of as many as 1–10 × 10 8 human adult hepatocytes by perfusing the left lobe of the liver. About 70–85% cells were viable with the trypan blue exclusion test; they attached to substrates and formed monolayers which survived for up to 8 days in culture.
